Lest We Forget

Dad One brave veteran of the D Day landings of Normandy expresses his feelings with heartrending sentiments. He says he wonders why he’s lived so long and many of his mates and friends got killed during action. Now 103, Donald Howkins has put into words the same sentiments as my father often expressed. Like Donald, my dad served his country during World War 2 aboard HMS Sheffield. He was first in the freezing North Atlantic and then part of the invasion of the Sicily campaign - a year before Donald’s harrowing experience. My father, W.T. Skeels, worked his way from Ordinary Seaman to Lt.Commander and served from 1939 until 1945. He was a mild-mannered and courageous man and British to his core. I miss him terribly.
